Subconsciously making my Saturday that much better
I spent my New Years Eve with what must be one of the hottest television shows of 2009 and that is 'Vampire Diaries' (if you hadn't figured it out by now!). At first I was reluctant about watching this series as I'm actually a L.J. Smith fan (for you folk who are unaware, Lisa Jane Smith is the author of the 'Vampire Diaries' book series upon which the show is based on) and just from the trailer I gathered it would be vastly different from the books but eventually I came to terms with the fact that rarely - if ever - are movie or television adaptations of books made exactly as it is. And to be honest it was a really good 10 episodes - yes, I actually couldn't stop watching and finished the entire season on 31st night! I don't know about you but I think it was a great way to end the year.
Without giving anything away, the basic storyline is of a human girl, Elena, who finds herself caught up in drama involving two vampire brothers - Stefan and Damon - and a 100 year old love story that sparked a feud between the brothers. (Minor spoiler alert) The first season primarily introduces viewers to the story of each character and towards the end of the season it starts to touch upon the deeper story going on with the brothers and how Elena's connected. (Minor spoiler alert over).
Considered a "rip off" of 'Twilight', I actually believe 'Vampire Diaries' was done better. Sure it's a little choppy in some places but I think it's much more darker and sinister which makes you really feel as though vampires exist. I have to admit one episode went as far as to give me nightmares! Another perk of 'Vampire Diaries' is the fact that there's Damon to lust after if you're of the slightly older generation (ahem, although twenty-something really isn't too old to lust after 17-year old Stefan!) - yay for being able to be vampire obsessed but not be called names for it!
Definitely one of my new favorite things to curl up in bed with - I give this an 8 out of 10.
